1.Porta Portese market - leave your wallet/purse at hotel in a safe or you're certain to get pickpocketed.
2. S.Maria in Cosmedin - the Bocca di Verita - put your hand in to check your truthfulness, an odd feeling.
3. OK, I won't mention the Vatican, except to advise: go up Raphael's dome (S.Pietro), to the lantern. Amazing journey up, wonderful views from top.
4. Join a Lazio soccer match crowd if poss.
5. Walk Tiber-side from Castel S.Angelo to Campidoglio (up the stairs), take a camera.
6. Tourism Office for latest free maps, topical events listings, advice from staff.
Buon viaggia!

It depends what you want to see but the best thing about Rome is the sheer sense of history all around you.
Personally I find one of the best sights to see is the Roman Forum from the Campidoglio. You climb the steps (about 300m due south of the Monumento Vittorio Emanuele) upto to the top of the Campidoglio and enter the square. Go ahead past the last building at the head of the square, passing it on the right (on the left hand side is the statue of Romulus and Remus - not very impressive). As you pass the building the panorama of the Forum opens up before you. Try it at night as one of the first sights of Rome and it's beautifully flood lit. It gives you a great impression of the size and splendour the city must have had two thousand years ago.
A half day or so wandering around the Forum itself is also worthwhile if you're into history.
About 25 km outside of Rome to the East near Tivoli is the Villa Adriana (named after the builder of Hadrian's wall) this is also worth a half day sightseeing.
Only problem right now is it's the hottest time of year and the heat will be oppressive -
Enjoy your stay and try not to let the sun fry your brains.

I'm going in about 15 hours.
My favourite building is the Pantheon. I like to take my shoes off and stand on the cold floor. You should also try to visit the catacombs. They are fascinating and have some great frescoes. Not far from Cerco Massimo there is a church where apparently 3 apostles hid. Can't remember the name but if you walk as if you are going towards the Colosseum there are some black railings on your left. Follow them and you come to a road that comes back on itself. You'll see a small church. That's the one.
Best place to eat lunch is Piazza Navona. Best place to people-watch is Spagna.
You should also try to visit some of the surrounding places. Buses and trains are really good. Go to Orvieto there's a famous Cathedral where the Apocalypse is painted on the walls. They also make nice wine in Orvieto and you can visit a vineyard there. Bracciano is a nice town on a beautiful lake. It's about an hour on the train and only 2.5 euro each way. The coast is nice too. Go to Torvaianica for good beaches or Ostia for cheap places to eat and drink on the sea front. If you like shopping the good shops are between Piazza di Spagna and Via del Corso. If you like bargain shops there is an outlet centre called Castel Romano.
Have a good time.

Couldn't agree with you more. I thought I was the only one feeling this way and I'm glad to see that I'm not. It's not so annoying to me when they do they're little thing before and after commercial breaks, but I truly do not get why they feel it's funny to do that crap RIGHT while the shows are on is FAR from amusing. Then there's that whole nick app ad they they just dropped right in the middle of a part on spongebob. They really covered the whole screen for an ad they could've just put at the bottom or corner of the screen. Why do they think this is cute, cool, or funny at all? It seems like they only do it when spongebob is on? Am I wrong or do they do it with other shows too? May be a stretch but my sister seems to think they're trying to imitate Incredible Crew as well. Anyone else think so?

The statue of David, should be passed, spending 30 minutes to an 1 hour, is a waste of time. Yes the statue has an oversized member but there are better things to see.
