The engine is heating up to about 275 degrees. Once it gets up that high, it can drop quickly to about 170. It has boiled over once. It is full of antifreeze. I know it could be the thermostat that is broken, but could there be something wrong inside the engine?

It has an electric fan set with a start at 195 and a stop at 170. It does turn on.

I strongly suspect the thermostat is acting up. It's a cheap (< $20) and easy (< 30 minute job) to replace.

Replace it and see how it goes.

If you haven't changed out the antifreeze in a while go ahead and replace it to. If the antifreeze is new, just catch it when you drain the radiator and put it back.

Good luck!

You must have antifreeze it is not just for winter.
It has a higher boiling point then water.
Also check oil to see if it has a milky color.
You get that motor that hot and you will warp the head. Probably not really that hot but when water gets really low sending unit does not get an accurate reading

It is not winter time. Change the antifreeze to coolant. They have the pre mixed jugs in most auto stores and department stores. This will be a inexpensive way to find out if there is a more seriuos problem before you spend a small fortune at a garage.

Thermostat probably isn't good, remember antifreeze has to be half and half, too much antifreeze will be thick, won't circulate, and the engine will overheat.

if it gets to 275, your thermostat isn't opening properly. Replace it, very simple job. Three bolts usually
