Remember when you were in 3rd grade? The kid that always had to be first in line, always got to sit in front while the teacher read to the class. Wonder what happens to them? They grow up to be selfish adults.

Recognizing the problem has already put you a step ahead. But I suggest you don't turn your back on this guy. His "needy", "selfish" and "self-serving" behavior is skilled and honed. He knows exactly how to put himself in the best light and get the praise he hopes for.

Keep a daily journal (never leave it at work, never!!) and try to find a pattern. Is it just you? Does he feel threatened by you, or anyone else at work? Are there specific incidents he took credit for your work, to your detriment? After a few weeks, "regroup" your thoughts and sit down with your boss. Put the burden on him to guide you, mentor your needs and be the "boss". Don't let him get away with just soothing words to stroke your ego. Ask for very specific actions you should use, very specific directions. And be prepared to file a grievance or complaint. Because what you tell your boss won't stay with just him. He may feel compelled to confront your co-worker so be prepared to back up your boss and stand up for yourself.
There is a workable solution, a win-win for everyone. Be strong and be adult. Leave the childish behavior to the guy still stuck in the "3rd grade"!

He sounds like someone trying to toot his own horn, no doubt because of his insecurities. If your boss is astute, he'll realize exactly what kind of employee this man is... and treat him accordingly. However, if your boss likes getting "sucked up to," you'll have decide whether to do the same thing or move on. I personally think it's undignified and not worth it... seems it all has hints of dishonesty... that a person doesn't truly share his thoughts but hopes that what he says pleases another.

He's trying to get you fired.

He's going behind your back manipulating the boss.

You should go to your coworker directly and let him know that it is absolutely not going to be tolerated.
