This old fashioned idea of shepards is nonsense. They all use calculators nowadays. The crooks double as shooting sticks(seats) with a capsule of brandy in the top, They have cell phones to chat to the wife. Its an easy life. coffee, (and lets not deny it, cocaine) keep modern day sheperds awake, in often drug fuelled, nothing short of, supine orgies! What dosent go on in a field when no one can see? Anyway, most sheep are electronicaly tagged, some as a result of ASBO's imposed after eating carelessly discarded cocaine, and thier subsequent bad behavior. The Expose' was in Farmer's World Magazine.
Shocking, Really!

Counting sheep doesn't work; some people actually did a scientific study on the matter. Turns out that it's so monotonous, and yet takes up so much concentration, that you just end up lying in bed, awake.

If you are halfway up a hillside in a howling gale with freezing rain trying to rip your face off looking for or counting bloody stupid sheep, sleep would be the last thing on your mind!

The process of counting sheep just clears the mind (ideally) allowing the body to entre rest easier, and making sure that worrying about things doesn't keep you awake. It is not sedative in and of itself. Thus, it doesn't put you to sleep when you don't want to go to sleep, or when you aren't in bed.

Unfortunately, shepherding has long been associated with narcolepsy. As such, all people in such occupations are now fitted with electronic devices that deliver a sharp shock whenever their brain activity slips into a pattern suggestive of sheep outside ofthe hours of 9pm-9am.
