Ferguson has not lost the plot. He is a good manager who generally motivates his players. However, like managers in every business, his job is to make the best of the resources given to him. In the case of Manchester United, this used to enable him to build winning sides, but now the Glazers are taking money out of the club he will have difficulty doing so any more.
Ferguson has always had limitations. He has fallen out with too many players, and he has made at least his share of bad transfer decisions. To some extent these were hidden by a fantastic generation of home-grown players at Man U - Gary Neville, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes etc. For some reason Man U not not finding as many players now from their youth teams.
Also, Ferguson is being overtaken by a new generation of managers. It is not his age - his experience is an advantage - but that there are managers coming up who use a whole raft of new scientific techniques and managerial skills. To be fair, Ferguson himself has done an enormous amount over the years to develop his assistants' managerial skills.
I would be surprised if Ferguson or Manchester United win the league in the forseeable future.
If I were Ferguson, I would go and do something quite different rather than go to the Man U boardroom. A driven man like him should rejuvenate himself by finding a new passion.

I think that United have like you say "mediocre" personnel for a team of their stature and they play a style which may allow them to regularly finish in the top four again. But it is also a style which has its limitations. I thought United played poor football for much of the year. But they managed to finish second. Ferguson is a good "motivator". But bullying can only take you so far. The caveat though is Rooney. As much as I criticize the personnel, the Rooney acquisition may well be enough to save Sir Alex's rep. I think Rooney is that good. But I don't think that he will be good enough to give them the league on his own. Even with a healthy Rooney, I'm picking United for fourth, behind Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool--in that order...

The Glazers own an American football team, not a baseball team. Ferguson needs to buy central midfielders, and now also a striker, before Man U can win the league.

I don't know how you can ask such a ridiculous question, of course he has`nt lost the plot, just look at Sir Alex`s record before you cast stones at his managerial skills, I believe he knows what he is doing, Van the man asked to go Alex did`nt want him to, which is why he put such a high price tag on him. As for not winning anything this season just watch this space (like they say)

Looks like he has. It was only a matter of time. As for the league i want Liverpool to win it, however if we don`t i just want the other prem teams to promise they will stop Chelski winning it again. I couldn`t bare to see MOANrinios smug face again.
