The rule is: critical well recieved, but commecially not. this inevitably means the films a slow burner, not initially grossing highly, but eventually doing well by usually by word of mouth. By definition this often means the biggest cult films are low budget affairs, without the cash for big distribution deals etc. So think b-movies (all your drive in stuff) and breakthrough horror (eraserhead, the hills have eyes, chainsaw massacre etc) films mainly. Also any film deemed to have a subliminal meaning which the audience have latched onto (gay classic like wizzard of oz, sound of music etc) or theose films that are so bad that they're great (so many from the 50 foot woman to showgirls) .
