Yes. Verbal wounds are just as bad as physical pain.

Side note to those who see depression as a character flaw ... do some research. 9 times out of 10, there is a physical reason for it. Ignorant statements like those made above do not help the situation.

a single incident of careless words can't put someone in depression. it may upset a person more easily if they were already in a depressing state but to be the cause of someone's depression, there's no way.
depression is what someone does to their own self, their mental state of mind, not what someone else says to them. depression is more complex then that. some people can over come it, some people get swallowed up by it and never truly recover completely. some people can experience relapse of it at times and some people can't survive without medication to control it.
to understand it completely you would of had to been a witness of someone with depression or experience it first hand.
there are different types of depression and many stages of it. for example manic depression and deep depression. one of the hardest things is being able to identify a depressive state. some people are depressed and don't realize it.

Yes. Someone's careless words could be a trigger for another person's depression.

However, even when depressed, that person is responsible for their responses.

You have to define what you mean by "depression"?

Are you talking clinical depression, or are you talking bad mood (depressed in the coloquial sense)

The circumstances that bring on clinical depression are highly complex interactions between your brain's biology, upbringing, drug use, etc. In fact, millions of dollars are spent each year researching the causes of depression because even the leaders in the field are not in agreement on what causes clinical depression.

So no, unkind words alone would not cause clinical depression.

Would they make a person sad, or angry? Yes
(Especially if it's something you know may be true, but try to convince yourself otherwise)

It's quite possible, yes. Someone who may be a manic depressive could easily be set off due to either an unintended or intended comment that they might perceive as verbal abuse or worse yet a character assassination directed towards them. Hopefully no one has done this to you but if they have then you should ask the person what was their intentions in saying what they said.

Best Wishes

NO. unless you interpret the words and give them pesonal meaning. imagine someone's careless words in a language you don't know...you wouldn't care.
it's human thinking here that creates depression and not someone's words.

Sure they could. You never know what's going on inside another person's head and how they may misinterpret the most innocent of comments.

Yes, indeed they could.

But either the other person is overly sensitive or already upset about something else.
