The reason they have started to ask for this to see if you possibly will be one to be a person that would be likely to skip out on working when you get money. There has been several studies done that show that people with a bad credit history are the people that like to skip out on the lesser paying jobs and even when they get a better paying job they will get enough for several payments then they will disappear again.
Having the credit they know Better also how to pay the person and some companies will follow it as you work there to see if it improves or not.
It is a bit on the side of invading ones privacy, but it is also helping employers not loss their businesses over people that are going to skip on them.

A good credit report demonstrates your level of trustworthiness as well as sense of responsibility. Basically, employers figure that if your credit history shows that you are a responsible bill payer then you are generally responsible and reliable. Plus it's a lot cheaper than a background check to verify your residence and times of employment.

Because your credit history gives them an idea as to what kind of person you are. If you are late with mortgage, rent or car payments, they figure you'll be late for work. If you haven't paid your debts, they figure you won't pay your dues at work... you'll be viewed as a deadbeat.

They want to know if you are financially stable, in case you get a job there because you are less likely to steal or defraud the company in some way, but I personally think they are doing it to be nosey.

i only know of them doing that in banks , and the reason they do it there is because you are dealing with peoples money and if you have bad credit it says you may have bad debt and there for are more likely to be open to being disonist and takeing what is not yours. not that they would but they are more likely.
