I joined a salon on a month to month membership. This is a "pay as you go" agreement, not an EFT. In other words, I didn't sign a contract obligating me to pay a fee every month.

When I signed up with this salon, they took my debit card number so that when I choose to pay a month's worth of membership, they can take it directly from my account.

Well, I decided to cancel my membership. I went to the salon and they told me that I have to call a toll free number, which I learned is for their billing company Affiliated Acceptance Corp. I called three times already, and each time there's a different excuse as to why they can't access my account to cancel it. The person at the salon told me that it shouldn't be a problem, if I don't go in to renew my membership for that month, they aren't supposed to bill my account. But I don't trust them and want to make sure they can't bill me. If I get a different debit card from my bank, can the salon still take money from my account?

When you call to cancel. Make sure the give you a confirm number. That should be all you need. If you change you debit number that will stop them also. Try calling again , get comfirn number if they say you have been took off.

I would just close that account completely and open a new one. Or discuss this problem with your bank and see if there is anyway they can stop payment from this company. If it continues, bring the issue up with a Troubleshooter and take it public. They get scared once you go public. And, I wouldn't trust anyone again with my debit account informaton...especially in a spa. Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

No, as long as you tell the bank that you feel your debit information was stolen or being used without your permisiion, they can order you a new card that is going to have a differnt 16 digit # on it but will still be linked to the same account.
