None of these answers are correct. Using a 13 speed, the driver starts the shilter w/the range selector in the down posision or low range. He/she then shifte through the lower six speeds and, with the clutch enguaged, flips the switch into the high range while shifting the transmision back into the lower position, which is now seventh gear.

In an 18 Speed, the shifter is simular except for one diofference. Between each phycial shift (movement of the lever) the driver has an added gear in each position that is reached with a flip of the thumb and not pushing on the clutch. On the shifter, an 18 speed tranny has an added switch on the top of the shifter. So, shifting would go something like this;

First gear position (thumb splitter in the down position), while increasing the speed, flip the thumb switch up. When ready to switch into second, release the excellerator and the tranny will shift into second.

While increasing speed, return the thumb splitter in the down position, When shifting is necessarry, clutch (or float) and push the shifter lever up, into the third speed and let out the clutch. While increasing the speed, flip the thumb switch up. When ready to shift, release the excellerator and the tranny will shift into fourth.

While increasing speed, return the thumb splitter in the down position, When shifting is necessarry, clutch (or float) and push the shifter lever down and to the right, into the fifth speed. While increasing the speed, flip the thumb switch up. When ready to shift, release the excellerator and the tranny will shift into sixth.

Basically the 18 speed is the same as the 13 speed except the 18 speed has some supper low gears you'd never use.

When I used to drive a 13 speed I used it like a normal transmission except when you get up to speed I jumped into 13th for more power going down the road. However in the mountains you can shift through those upper gears for more choices.

I think when in the high range you can switch back and forth until you get to 13th. I dont know how to explain. Just normally shift and then play with that extra knob when you get into high range.
I myself still like the old 9 speeds.

The ability to shift gears smoothly is part of the pride of being a good truck driver.When you get assigned a truck with an automatic , it hurts the ego. After you get past your pride , you will find that an automatic transmission has some very good qualities.In city driving,it can't be beaten,much faster acceleration.You don't need to think about shifting,just focus on driving.The down side is hauling heavy loads in hilly or mountain conditions.The automatic doesn't down shift fast enough

most semis have about 14 gears
2 reverses
12 forwards

the layout is similar to a cars HH
reverse is in the upper left or lower right corner
you shift into 1st on the upper left, then 2, 3, 4 5, 6
when you reach the last possible gear allowed in the H formation
you shift to neutral, pull the tab (forgot the name) with your finger tips and you are now in the second level of gears

1 is now 7, 2 is 8, 3 is 9, 4 is 10, 5 is 11 and 6 is 12

most truckers dont use all gears. if the load is light or no cargo at all, you skip gears.
with no load you can go 1, 3, 5,6,7 and so on to get speed
or you can go 2,4,5,6 (note: not good to skip gears above 5)

Well, it's all preference. The pro's with a manual is you are more in control on what gear u are in, and in bad weather or climbing a hill that can be a very good thing. The con's are you have to shift the gears yourself. By the way, a 13 speed is way more better and less stressful than a 10 speed.
