He smoked and drank a lot, was rude to his staff and did a bit of radio. Anyone could have done that, and is hardly an example of an inspiring leader.

The great many numbers of men and women of the UK and its allies helped win the war through every effort of their own, not through Mr Churchill.

And yes I've read up on my history as I'm sure most of you have too. Can I get some intelligent answers too, I'm interested in your opinions, rather than 'read up yourself u uneducated moron', etc!

Peace.

some good answers and responses so far, thank you. i repeat my point though, less of the 'read up on it more' - WWII and history is part of our curriculame vitae, and the vast majority of people in this country know about churchill as a person and WWII. Furthermore I don't just agree with any author just because he / she has written a book! What I've stated are facts, and I'm interested in your views. My view is that he's overrated. clearly im in a minority, but hey, thats the way the way it goes. im not here to insult people just gather people's thoughts and opinions on what unfortunalty appears to be a sensitive subject.

You are so right. This guy actually insulted Gandhi more than once. He is so overated. He was a good leader but great, heck no! If anyone was great at keeping people together it would have to Stalin or Roosevelt. Stalin was Evil but I can not see anyone saving Russia from the Germans besides his crazy ****.

I see....you were there, I take it?

I wasn't, but I also am willing to admit that since I wasn't there, I really am not in a position to say whether or not Winston Churchill was any more heroic or symbolic than others.

Was Rudy Giuliani any more important on 9/11? Perhaps so, perhaps not; but in either case he was a focal point for those who rallied to rescue those they could, and to mourn those they could not.

Comparatively speaking, Winston was one heck of a lot better than his predecessor (Neville Chamberlain), who had been a supporter of the "peace at all costs" approach. It was under his leadership that Germany managed to acquire Poland, Belgium, Austria and France...virtually resistance-free (at first). At each stage, Mr. Chamberlain would speak to Adolph Hitler, who would tell him exactly what he wanted to hear, and poor Neville would return to the British public with the "good news" that Germany wasn't going to be expanding any further.

Yeah, that worked out pretty good, didn't it?

I'd do a bit more reading if I were you. History is more than just our opinions, and it's far more than just whatever facts the winners managed to jot down when they had the time. The people are complex, the situations are intriguing, and the combination of the two can be positively obsessive if you let it.

Churchill is one of the greatest Prime Ministers in the UK ever. His inspiring words kept the UK from folding and failing in the war against Germany unlike France and others. He is much better than your Roosevelt who let Stalin have all of eastern Europe which initiated the Cold War. My question to you isn't Roosevelt the most overrated President of all time? I believe if it was not for WWII Roosevelt would have been a mediocre President at best. It took Hitler to get the United States out of the depression while the great Churchill was inspiring the British people to fight for their country.

Here are some real facts which should help you decide. Churchill was working in the foreign office in 1922 when Ireland managed to negotiate partial freedom from the UK. He held various posts but came to prominence when the pre war prime minister, Chamberlin came back from Germany having met Hitler in 1939 waving a piece of paper getting off the plane which was supposed to be Hitlers agreement not to invade England in return for the UK being cowards and allowing Hitler continue to take over Europe.

By 1939 Hitler had complete controll of France, Belgium, Denmark, Poland and pretty much the whole of europe. (except UK). UK was not a major military power and in reality germany was like the usa and britian like canada in terms of military power. All the other nations were so overwhelmed with the power of the germany military they handed over their administrations without a fight (Paris etc).

Weeks after the piece of paper waving return of Chamberlin, the Nazi's without warning started to BLITZ london in the "Battle of Britian". Amid the Carnage after the first weeks bombing (would make lebanon look like a walk in the park. Chamberlin resigned and instead of surrender to save life and hand over their administration, Churchill took over and the nationed tuned in to the wireless on the firs morning he addressed a very frightened nation with the "We shall fight them on the beaches, we shall fight them in the streets, WE SHALL NEVER SURRENDER" speech that rallied an entire nation into a david and goliath battle. Churchill inspired a nation to fight back, kept morale high, did a deal with the americans for military equipment, (a deal by the way that only got it's final payment in 2002) and ultimately kept the germans at bay. The radar was invented in Britian during this battle giving the allies an edge and the Americans ultimately joined the battle. Churchill convinced a nation it could win against the odds, even the queen after the palace was bombed.

It was churchill that turned the war along with the russians after hitler decided they would be easier than the brits.

He ultimately died of Syphilis!

A great man of the last century.

Sorry, but you obviously haven't read up enough. To the people that endured in these Isles during those dark days, he was a fine leader. A man for all seasons!
Yes he drank, smoked and could be a bit off with people! So what? Would you want a teetotal, non smoking, nice guy with no sense of leadership?
FDR had polio! Didn't stop him from leading his country?

go home and read some more. We needed a tuff man to do a tuff job. With out Mr Churchill we would not have won the battle of britain and made our country safe and impossible to invade (yes america we saved our own country! Your assitance at the reclaimation of europe only made the job quicker, with the other counties it could have been done easily with out u!) Churchill was a battle commander who knew his stuff, history proves this!

He habitually walked around naked after his bath at Chartwell too, but he was probably the most important individual in the world during WWII, because he recognized Hitler for what he was and did something about it, while British high society was wearing swastika jewelry. You need to read his entire biography to realize why he is so admired.
