it's recommended that you allow them to keep the paci until all their teeth come in b/c it helps to form their jaw-line as their teeth come in...also, it's the best teether out there! you'll find that as he gets a little older, he'll be wanting the paci less and less b/c so many other things will interest him...but you also need to realize that at this stage, a pacifier is his "blanky" so to speak...it's the thing that comforts him and makes him feel safe...
by the time my baby girl was 9 or 10 months, the only time she had her binky was if she was teething or for her naps...i took it out after she woke up and fed her and stuff and if i wanted to, i'd never have to give it to her again...
so i would recommend that you not be in such a hurry to get rid of it and you'll see that as he gets older, if he doesn't cry for it, don't give it to him and get him on a strict sleeping-only binky time and after that, it's easy as cake to get him off of it...

There is a new study just out from UCLA that states that the use of a pacifier can reduce the incident of SIDS by 70% and that covers the first 18 months. Who would have thought we could do something so simple to lower the risk of something so scary. As far as teething as long as you use one of the pacifiers like the Nuk that are made to encourage correct teething then you are safe. I think weaning a 6 month off the pacifier is really young but that is only my opinion it is the personal choice of the parent, only you know what is best for your child. I have found with my children, I have 3 grown boys and one new grandchild, that when taking away something like a pacifier that cold turkey is the only way to go if you try to wean them off it they get confused about what you are doing. Good luck

6 mos old is way too young to wean your son off of a pacifier. Before you stop your child from pacifiers or thumb-sucking, understand why children do it in the first place. I am not sure why so many parents are embarassed by pacifiers or thumb-sucking. No one ever appreciates what it really accomplishes for the child. Experts say that they allow a child to build self-confidence and allows them to pacify themselves instead of always running to their parents. Especially when it comes to the middle of the night, kids can either cry for you to come and care for them or they can grab their pacifier and put themselves back down.
Before you try to push your child into relinquishing the pacifier or thumb-sucking or any other means of security, please read the following article.

Good Luck.

6 months is not too old to be using a pacifier. Let it be.

If you really want to get him off of it, cut a hole in the tip of the pacifier. As he continues to suck on it, the hole will get bigger and bigger, and it'll start to be less appealing. Eventually your son won't want it anymore.
Personally, I think its too early to wean him off of it. But that's the best method....it worked for me when I was little!!!!
God bless!

i know what you are going thru, i tried everything from teething rings and soft chew toys for babies who are cutting teeth, nothing worked, finally one day he just thru it down and never picked it up again he was about 7-8mths old. im sure that chewing on the nipple of the pacie helps him with his teeth cutting. no its not bad for his incomming teeth, but after about a year old then you might have a problem. you can also ask his peditration what you can do, but most children break themselves from it. Hope this helps

I don't think it is bad. Try giving it to him just at naps and bed time. Keep him occupied the rest of the time. They are only awake for a few hours at that age so it's not hard to do.
