they always are crossing the road at night and I feel so bad when I have to hit them.

They are not necessarily crossing,they are attracted to the latent heat w/in the pavement

Because these roads are crossing the seasonal migration route to pools needed for reproduction, or the route to hibernating grounds. So it is not the frogs that cross, it's the roads.

Nights are cooler, have no sunlight and if it rains, the frog has preferable conditions to keep its skin moist during the trip. Thereby avoiding the risk of desiccating.

hitting them is fun, they go *squish* *pop* *BANG!* (if your lucky).

They cross the road because they are kind of like worms (they come out of the soil when it rains). The worms do this because they need to get air. Frogs have to migrate and find a good moist dark spot that isn't being pelted by rain. And so sometimes they cross roads. I think frogs may also be attracted to wet tar.

I know i am the same way you would think over time they would know but they like the heat of the roads at night and when it rains it puts of more heat

They like rain and they probably want to get to somewhere they relate to maybe the forest. Don't squish them you evil man!
