overdrive specifically refers to the pushing of the gain on a tube amp to cause distortion.

Distortion is a broader term that includes overdrive and also includes other analog and digital effects like pedals or distortion plugins on a computer.

I think the standard analogy is overdrive is BROOOM and distortion is BZZZZZ. What this essentially means is that overdrive is (or relicates) an amp being pushed to it rational limits. This is obviously distorting the sound, but as far as I understand it distortion is much broader, depending on what you use.

There's not much difference, if there is any. I think overdrive is a lot more crunchy or whatever...I dont really know but it doesnt really matter, does it?
