Severe nerve trauma. Broken left mandible in 1999. SFGH doctors placed metal plate and did severe nerve damage. Plate removed two years later. Third UNNECESSARY surgery 2003 incision outside face major damage. Pain: neck muscles, teeth, gums, nerves: lips, uncontrollable spasms, must massage constantly. Think about suicide often, but I am a fighter. Pain so intense I can not smile or laugh, difficulty breathing and chewing (digesting food). Teeth do not align properly. Jaw does not rest comfortably, must move constantly, can not control pressure of muscles biting down, always tense muscles. Assymetrical face, left side droops due to third surgery. I had broken jaw in 1988 with just wiring the teeth, no metal plate, healed fine, no nerve damage. (private hospital, good specialist) Never have metal plate put on jaw. Wiring the teeth is enough. I am open to any ideas. Any kind of volunteer cutting edge new technology or surgery is not too outlandish for me. Any suggestions

you need to see a real proffessional. i have recently had extensive jaw surgery, and after only a month, i couldm't be more pleased with the results. Dr. Larry Wolford, at Baylor Medical Center In Dallas. He is an amazing surgeon. He designed his own surgery, tools, and only works with certain people in the hospital b/c he wants everything to go soooo well. And it does. I am almost positive he could help you, and if not he could recomend someone who he trusts very much. Although it might be a drive to get to dallas (like it was for us, it takes a day) think about how great it would be it all of this was fixed. hope i helped, and good luck to you.

My OBGYN gave me tylenol with codine and scared me about using it and having it go in to my breast milk I think I took one and left the rest. I didn't really have any major pain after the first 24 hours anyway. When I did say I had pain at the hospital my doctor just said "yeah, get used to 18 more years of it" and then ask if I wanted something stronger that would mean putting a hold on nursing. I said no and just sucked it up and dealt. The nurses kept me up and moving and that alone seemed to make a big difference-I was walking the ward with in 3 hours of surgery. And my mom is a nurse, she is freinds with several of the nurses there so I know I was getting excellent care. I think today doc's who know you want to nurse err on the side of caution. My doctor didn't want me to take any migraine meds during pregnancy or while nursing, said to avoid pain meds as much as possible, and try to do breathing exercises to help with pain. I was amazed at how well I did without those meds to fall back on.

i have heard of non-invasive radiation therapy for this. a machine that looks similar to an mri machine shots low powered radiation at the facial nerve. it doesn't destroy the nerve (then you would have no facial control and you would drool everywhere), but it sheds a few layers off the nerve. it does it just enough to deaden the pain. ask your doctor about it.
