I mean look it up before you talk! There are laws on welfare reform... President Clinton is responsible for that.... So, I guess my question is..... ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT...... what can be done to make the system better? Having mandatory lengths of time, etc... for EVERY STATE? Or is that impossible?

i've never been on welfare, so no i'm not an expert but i'm taxed every payday to support it and not by choice. so i think i've bought my right to comment on it.
as for my comment, i think if someone needs it then they deserve to receive the help. i have no problem with that one bit. as for making the system better, stronger guidelines, there are too many loop holes in the system. people are finding ways around requirements. in missouri there are limits on how long a person can be on it, then they are required to get a job, which that has loop holes too. i think mandatory lengths of time would be a great idea and totally agree with that one. every state required to have the same guidelines would be great but that will never happen. is it impossible? i think anything is possible.
final comment if they straighten out the welfare system then i think next, they need to work on the disability program that people are abusing too. disability is for disabled not for the ones that are too lazy to work, able to find a doctor to cover for them and then working for cash on the side.
since i'm on a role now i can't forget to attack the social security system. which most likely won't have any funds in it when i reach the age requirement. if you want to receive a check at the required age, you get what you worked for. if a person has never worked a day in their life, then no check for them. which that sounds cold hearted but all those free hand outs is what has put the social security system in the mess that's its in today.

Most of the people who comment react to the hot-button word "welfare" as if it were a dirty word when it really means helping someone improve an intolerable situation. There are several important programs under the welfare system - programs to help mothers with young children, disabled people, homeless people, elderly poor and even working people who earn minimum wage.

These programs are essential social services, for if the government did not provide health care, subsidize housing or give food stamps, many families would be meaner, sicker and there would be more crime as these people still have to eat, sleep, travel to work and school, and try to become self-sufficient. Even bums and hassles aspire to a big score to get out of poverty.

Most of you cannot imagine how little money you actually get from social services. The grants for a single mother with one child are about $650 per month and she is suppose to pay for her housing, food, bills, formula and diapers, transportation and everything else. It seems barbaric that the only way she can better herself is to abandon the child to a daycare facility while she goes out to work to escape the poverty.

The disabled people with mental or physical impairments might get SSI payments of about this much also but have the added burden of being unemployable because of the disability. Even though society has tried to make opportunities for disabled people, there are few jobs available for a nutcase or someone like me who falls asleep with narcolepsy all day long - forever.

Did you know that many people earning above minimum wage could qualify for a cash grant and food stamps and medical subsidies? A family of four where a parent works full-time earning $7.50 per hour could be eligible for $147 in food stamps per month and if they only earned minimum wage that could raise to $313 per month.

One bad thing about the reform movements is that the bad attitudes hurt the people that need the most help. Do you know that free federal medical care is no longer available unless you are disabled, pregnant, under 18, or very ill. This means that there will be bigger bills to your counties for the free care they will have to provide and are no longer being reimbursed for. This is a step backward.

Also, for all the talk about helping the homeless, you must know that the GA General Assistance grants they get add up to about $300 per month. That does not pay for housing or even food for all month, so that is why you see the situation prolonged. Instead, if you gave them enough money to dry out and clean up and have a stable place with a phone and shower, you could change their whole attitude toward life and have an employable citizen again.

They comment on welfare because their hard earned money is taken out in taxes and are given to people who receive welfare. I'm just happy the U.S. isn't like some countries I know where the government actually pays people enough to own a car, have an apartment, plus have plenty of entertainment and that countries tax is set at 16% or higher. They even have a church tax for those who go to church. How sorry is that? Happy to be here in the U.S. :)

I know that part of the pooled resources in my state come right out of taxes that come out of my checks each week and that gives me the right to express my opinion about the welfare system even if I don't know about it to the smallest detail. I do know that I hope I never have to be a part of it with my family. Before you go reading too much into this..I'm not saying welfare recipients are bad people ( been a part of it as a child) Just hope to never have to use it.

No. I work for Medicaid, and I think the only way out, is through education. College needs to be more tangible for the impovershed, Teens that get pregnant in highschool need to be able to finish at least high school. Financial counseling would be helpful. Public transportation could be better. Obviously there will always be people who abuse the system, and I think if there was more people investigating fraud that would help have it for people who need it. It's sad that oil companies made 10 billion dollars in the last 3 months, and there are people out there eating out of trash cans.

If a person is physically and mentally able to work, they have to EARN there check and support.

There are now generations of families that make a living out of working the system and if you say that isn't true, YOU don't know the reality of the situation!!!

And no offense, Sandra, but our taxes are "set higher than 16%"! When you get a job, you'll know how much you are taxed!

I think welfare, or rather socialism, is THEFT. Your taxes are taken from you whether you like it or not, and given to other people, some of whom just don't want to get off their duff and work.

I keep thinking...what if we had a voluntary charity tax?

(Just thinking out loud on my keyboard....)

i am allowed to comment because i pay taxes that go to pay people's welfare. the governemtn does not tell me what they are using my money for so why should i hold my comments? and if anyone out there is on welfare i can say "You are welcome" because i am helping to pay for your lazy ***.
