there are many interpretations of why he is called Mr. _______. i have read it many times and my feeling is that because of fear. celie was just a child when she married him... not to mention the fact that he was a violent bully. also, the book is her diary...so i think that when she writes Mr. ____, it's her way of NOT acknowledging him. at this point in her life...GOD is the only "man" in her life..the only "man" that matters...even though i have read the book several times... i am in no way saying that this is the only interpretation....but i will tell you that you will be surprised by the end...

From Celie's point of view, the man she was forced to marry does not treat her with any decency or respect. He was really interested in her sister, but married Celie out of convenience because he needed someone to help run his household and manage his children. And her father arranged for her to marry him. To her, because she was so young, he was just "Mister" from down the road, not a man with a first or last name.

Make sure you read the book, but when you get lost or confused, you can check with this as a guide.

Ask yourself, who is the book about, and could Celie refer to her husband by his name, or is she forced to be his slave and only refer to him as Mr. ? Maybe that's part of the answer...

It's a great book.

I loved that book. It is hard thought, but I would advise you on getting the movie...it explains ot SOOO much better. She called him that because he felt her as lower then him and that is what he wanted her to call him. She was not his equal she was his property so to speak. Trust em get the movie as well as the book and you will understand better...good luck!!!

i believe it's because any name she called him except Mister would have made him more human to her. he wasn't. he was a monster and horrible to her. she did not acknowledge his presence in her life. it was the only way she could deal with him as a part of her life.
