I'm interested in buying a mini rex (that's the breed) rabbit but I'm not sure if i should spend the money on a breeder or just go down to the local pet store. Also about how old should they be and should i make sure they're previously spade/neutured or do it after my purchase?

Your best option is a breeder. I breed rabbits and show, and I know that most rabbits in petstores are from irrisponsible breeders who have no way of otherwise selling thier rabbits, or they are unshowable rabbits that breeders can't sell because they aren't quality. Going to the ASPCA website or petfinder is a good idea, but once again you cannot count on quality of the breed. If you want a spayed or neutered rabbit, the ASPCA may be best because breeders do not typically spay or neuter because breeders keep males and females separated (though I believe it is a worthy investment if you are only going to have a few rabbits), so you will have to do it yourself if you want a rabbit from a breeder. Lastly I'll throw in a personal opinion. :) I do not agree with petstores selling rabbits unless they are rescues because they often sell the rabbits for loads more than they are really worth (I once saw an oversized senior dwarf for sale for over 30 dollars). All the breeders in my area sell thier rabbits for 20-30 dollars, and they are more likely to be a rabbit you want. If the breeders in your area are charging an unreasonable amount, don't support them. Look around, mini rex are one of the most common and popular breeds, you should be able to find a breeder fairly close that is responsible and will offer you a good deal. Go the American Rabbit Breeders Association website, you may be able to locate a breeder there. www.arba.net
