A serial killer is a man or woman who kills 2 or more people according to FBI criteria. The general rule of thumb when in doubt is to figure 2-3 people, killed by a person(s). The span of time in which he/she kills is not figured into the pattern unless the person uses time as part of the modus operandi (MO). The MO can and will change depending on what the killer believes the police know or in escalation to other behaviors.

A serial Killer becomes thus by killing at least 3 different people with the same "Modus Operandi" or "MO" meaning the same style or same type of victim, they usually take a break between victims. There are 3 types of "Serial Killer"

A serial killer is someone who commits three or more murders over an extended period of time with cooling-off periods in between. In between their crimes, they appear to be quite normal, a state which Hervey Cleckley and Robert Hare call the "mask of sanity." There is sometimes — but not always — a sexual element to the murders.

"A Mass Murderer", on the other hand, is an individual who commits multiple murders in a single event and in one location. The perpetrators sometimes commit suicide, meaning knowledge of their state of mind and what triggers their actions is often left to more speculation than fact. Mass murderers who are caught sometimes claim they cannot clearly remember the event.

"A Spree Killer" commits multiple murders in different locations over a period of time that may vary from a few hours to several days. Unlike serial killers, however, they do not revert to their normal behavior in between slayings

A serial killer is someone who murders people to no reason, pattern, knowledge of the person, and no limit. They just like to murder random people so they can watch them suffer. It is a sickness

Someone who kills one at a time, never in large groups. They always have a plan and follow a pattern. They show no remorse for whom they are killing, that's why it's easy for them to murder one after another.

I think it's somebody who has killed a certain amount of people with a period of rest in between. They contemplate their crimes beforehand rather than going on a one-time killing spree.
