Understanding economics. The consequences of having an economic ignorant population is bad public policy and people not understanding why the government does the things it does when they make good policy. In MI everyone is mad at bush because he won't restrict trade. Trade is what makes our lives so great. Bush is right on this but most people haven't studied economics or they did study and they don't want to believe what they were taught.
An individual skill that is important is career pathing. Finding a career and choosing a path starting from education. Making poor decisions here can cost many thousands of dollars, if not more. I'm going back to school because I chose the wrong path. I could be so much further ahead if I had majored in a different area of business.

Work ethic!
The consequences are being replaced by an immigrant because they have MUCH better work ethic than almost everyone in the whole country! If more people were willing to do the down and dirty jobs for the same wages that we're paying the immigrants then we would actually have a leg to stand on in the anti-illegal immigration debate, but since the majority of people here (especially Boeing workers) go on strike just for not being multibillionaires, and can't seem to grasp the concept of doing things just because they need to be done, I don't think that that will EVER EVER EVER EVER happen, not even in a billion years.

My friend Chocolate the stripper says: You can benefit from having any skills and down side is if you don't have that skill and you need it, you have to pay somebody or find somebody who does.

being able to see other's points of view, ie being open minded. that way you could still keep your thoughts and opinions, but be able to see and improve/point out positive or negative points from both sides. also, u will be able to help present your view in their circumstance, and therefore be able to communicate/compromise much easier, as well as understand where the other person is coming from even if u don't necessarily agree.
consequences of not having it are being stuck at a stalemate, not being able to see eye to eye w/ people or explain your position very well so that others can understand. u become misunderstood, taken advantage of and/or looked down upon, hated, or ignored.

Sympathy, because you can get easier into other people's shoes and that makes for a great relationship in business or personal.
If someone doesn't have it they usually come across as a selfish and intolerant person.
