Its a reference to the Beverly Hillbillies.
One of the characters was Jethro Bodine who was big and not so bright.

This is an insult. Jethro was a character on the TV show Beverly Hillbillies who was stupid as a rock although handsome and kind. It was mainly his stupidity that was emphasized.
