I just began working at a company (2 months ago) with about 800 world employees. I'm actually also part of a union (first time in my life). Unfortunately they are looking to cut back costs & they are already going to be laying people off. My question to all of you is who gets laid off first. The person who has put the most time in to the company but make more because of their seniority or someone like me who just started and makes the least amount. Who is the union supposed to protect more? We both do the same amount of work, the only difference is they have been here longer than I have. All responses welcome. Thanks!

I agree with the same idea of that they hire me & then lay me off in a 4 month span (CRAZY, it wastes everyone's time). I don't think it will be my position but it's definitly possible nothing is guaranteed. I would think that they would want to get rid of the person that does the same thing as me but makes 25% more, but that's not how unions work i guess.

Sometimes there will be an offer on the table to allow an incentive to older employees who are closer to retiring. That way the cost of salaries will go down drastically, and yet it will preserve the "newer" employees, and actually create a lot of opportunity for promotion. Might be worth pitching to them.

But usually, the union tries to protect everyone. However, seniority is a big thing in unions. But so is work ethic. It might not be the end for you... Strange that they would hire you two months before lay-offs. They may not be interested in laying off your position.

I think it would depend on what department is down sizing. If they are merging with another company and taking on the other companies human resources department. Then the HR department will take the hit. Not another department or anything like that.

Normally layoffs to union personnel is required to be in order of seniority, starting with the lowest.
