Job description:
Seeks creative ways to attract costumers to an specific product or service. First of all, you need to need your target (age,$, city, etc).
You should do some sales tasks but not always, it's more important make the strategy of marketing than the sales, in your job.
This strategy is formed by: advertising, promotions, feedback, public relations, trips and teamwork.
It's needed to know accounting but it isn't your main tool.

Marketing is very funny , but stay very aware about false friendships, or friend of your job not your person, because when you change to another job, people usually forget you or had used you for getting something or had been invited to the parties.

Ask for advice of the old managers or people that now is independent of the big companies. All those have nice tricks.

Marketing covers a broad spectrum of events, right from identifying an opportunity (need of the market / people) to satisfying the need by producing, distributing(selling) to the target consumers (and shoppers too. You need to identify the difference between the two). Marketing department does the first part and hands it over to the operations / sales team for the distribution as per the targets decided by the marketig dept and agreed by operations. Above the line(Media advert) and below the line (in store / on pack promotions, Point of sale materials) support is provided by marketing. Marketing also is responsible for after sales follow up.
