Marathon runners need to have endurance for the long race so conserving energy comes from efficient use of their energy and the sacrifice of unnecessary weight. This is in contrast with sprinters who require burst energy and speed for a short duration of time.

Wow, Man, Have you ever been so high on endorphins that you thought you might never come down?????? Habitual long-distance runners become addicts of sorts... I know, because I was one. As their body becomes more & more conditioned to the wear & tear of those countless miles, the time for the "big rush" on endorphines becomes greater & greater... runners actually come to crave this "high" and may even experience "withdrawl" if unable to run for more than a couple days.
Moreover, I've witnessed in myself and others, a kind of clinical depression that can come with the cessation of running for any extended period of time... As a runner, your metabolism is so elevated that there is no way you can overeat while you're training for the big marathon... the tendency is to "under eat" because the stomach tends to shrink as the washboard abs arrive. But yes, a runner can come to look like "Starvin' Marvin" over time, simply because they are "speed freaks" of sorts...
I'll say this though, I've never had a weight problem, even after I stopped running those long distances... and there is NOTHING like a long run, to clear the head & plan for the week!

Because they run a lot to train and as a result they actually use up more calories than most people and they likely trim their total body fat to just a few percent, unlike the vast majority of the population.

Because being light makes running easier. Can you imagine how hard running would be if you are overweight? (No offense to anyone out there).
Besides, they burn a lot of fat and calories running.
