Yes he died of a drug overdose back in 1993 when he was 23 years old. So sad, he was very talented and cute and I'm sure he had a great life ahead of him. His brother is Joaquin Phoenix (who use to go by the name Leaf). As a matter of fact, his brother, who had just turned 19 a few days earlier, was there when he died and he was the one who called 911. He also has 3 sisters named Rain, Summer, and Liberty and most of them are also actresses, although they're not as famous.

A club, by the way, that Johnny Depp owned at the time.He'd been partying with actress Christina Applegate, his girlfriend Samantha Mathis and siblings Joaquin (his brother to answer that part of your question) and Rain at the Viper Room on Sunset Blvd. the night of his death.

River Phoenix died in his his brothers arms(Joaquin) outside the Viper Room(Johnny Depps bar) in Los Angeles from a drug overdose. his brother made the 911 call and in it he was really bitchy n rude to the operator taking the info. They played it over and over on the news, this was before Joaquin became famous as an actor.
