It wasn't Ben Franklin. He just demonstrated that lightning was the same as static electricity.

The ancient Greeks used balls of amber on spindles that they rubbed to generate sparks. This is the triboelectric effect, mechanical separation of charge in a dielectric. Their work was a precursor to the development of the leyden jar.

Allegedly, it was an Italian guy called Volta who stuck some copper into a frog's leg.
But I'm sure some Wizards have "discovered it much earlier, they just didn't know they did....
