Since day one of Operation Shock and Awe, President Bush has repeatedly said in many different ways that the war in Iraq is being fought to make Americans safer from terrorists. What justifies the safety of Americans being paid for with human lives (i.e., Iraqi civilians). If you're someone who thinks that killing civilians is a "necessary evil" because terrorists hide behind civilians, what justifies the U.S. committing acts of evil but others should not?

I REALLY wish somebody would answer the question! I'm not looking for your opinion on whether the war is good or bad blah blah blah. READ THE QUESTION!

Hurray! msfyrebird below admits it! She says kill all those damn Iraqis that get in the way as long as you save your "buddies." At least she ANSWERED THE QUESTION (even if it was a hideous military recruiter's answer).

from msfyrebird below: "Our military does nothing and MORE of our soldiers are killed..."

That's a LIE. If the military wasn't in Iraq no military person would be killed. I take it back. SHE'S JUST A MILITARY RECRUITER!

msfyrebird: Offended? I apologize, but I KNEW you were simply somebody in some way connected to the military, or who had a family member in the military, or who has been "trained" by someone in the military, or who is pro-war because of knowing someone in the military. Your answer is QUITE SUFFICIENT (but in no way the best. Sorry :)

The fact that the operation is called 'shock and awe' sums it up. Basically Bush's tactic is to blow the hell out of everything that moves. Iraq may harbour terrorists but it was not Iraqi's that attacked the world trade centre, or were responsable for the London bombings. the 'war on terror' may have some truth to it but this war is not about the safety of the US public, its about money and a knee jerk reaction from a knee jerk government.

Just trying to understand where you are coming from. Our military is not going out and killing civilians just for the fun of it. If the terrorists are using civilian locations in which to place their missiles or to hide then, there are two choices. Our military does nothing and MORE of our soldiers are killed... NOT good! OR our military attacks and civilians are killed. I tell you what, you go over there and fight and then decide. If they are shooting at you from behind civilians and your buddy just got shot, what are you going to do? Personally, I know what I would do.

lol... at the asker as you twist and quote my words, picking only little sections of what I said that will suit whatever point you care to make... you must be a liberal... you ignored answering the question of what you would do if you were being shot at and your buddy just got hit or would you turn tail and run and leave him dying? We didn't ask to go there, the destruction of the Twin Towers had nothing to do with gas, there was no compliance on Irag's part following Desert Storm, weapons of mass destruction have been found but liberals have managed to poopoo and sway the liberal media into fooling the public who believes anything they see in print or hear on the evening news.

Sorry, not a recruiter and I don't believe them for one minute. However, I have a son in the military who is putting his life on the line so you can spout nonsense of which you know nothing... I have a husband who served during Desert Storm, a Father-in-Law who served in Korea and a father who served during WWII. Guess that makes me a bit biased in favor of my freedom and the cost of it.

I don't like hearing about children and other civilians being killed. It greatly saddens me that a religion would use them as shields for their dirty work. But tell me how a soldier or a person is supposed to know whether that gunfire that just occured came from another soldier or from that innocent looking 14 year boy. BTW 14 year-olds are part of the fighting force over there. We cannot put our society's mores and culture onto others, they are not the same. They do not place the same value on life as we do and to think they are the same is to make us look weak. If we look weak, they are going to perceive us as weak and therefore intensify their attacks. Which means more terrorist attacks brought here to our shores. Ahhhhhh, that must be what you want as then it would even out the the United States "acts of evil"...

It's a false premise, America is now more insecure, threatened and insular than before 9/11 and the various 'wars against terror' What has backfired is the strategy of staging the 9/11 terror acts and the promise to then remove all freedoms to protect America. The sheep that follow the Republican party believed it and are now too frightened to leave their front doors. Shame isn't it?

Iraq is a poor example, or at least difficult for me to defend as I do not agree with our invading Iraq either. Generally speaking though if a populace allows armed terrorists to hide among them without reprisal then the population deserves what it gets.

"American policy toward all governments in the world must be based on judgments about the best interests of our country, derived from prolonged experience and understanding, and formulated with long-term goals in mind. With rare exceptions, no one event can completely determine our outlook. Iraq is a profoundly isolated rogue regime in the world and deservedly so. When they stop supporting terrorist acts and aggression against their neighbors, U.S. policy will change accordingly

It's being fought for a lie.

The administration connected terrorism to Iraq, when it never existed.

After seeing how barbaric secular violence has killed so many, I am beginning to think Saddam had no other choice than to rule with such a heavy hand. And it kills me to admit it.

grow up.....I can tell you, you haven't seen anything yet. I'm not liking what I'm seeing, but what scares me most is that we have so many in this country who are just willing to turn over the keys. Peace at all costs. Balderdash!
