If I understand you question correctly, you want to know if a video card plays any role in the video editing process and in the 3d rendering/modeling/creation process. Is that correct? If so then your answer is YES.
Is it as important as in the gaming environment. NO!
Do you need it to create the images? NO!
Do you need it to really view and move around to inspect what you have created? NO!
Does it help make the job easier and faster? YES!
You do not have to have the drawing speed but it helps a lot in 3D rendering when trying to move around and through an fully rendered object. If you are working on wire frame models then just about any APG video card will work.
Does it help with Video Editing? Not much except that the bigger the screen the better and a better video card is needed to display a large screen size in true color. Most new APG cards with 64 Megs of memory will work fine.

Video editing software can be set to take video from inputs on a video card. Most standard video cards don't have inputs, but higher end cards do.

I take my video from the firewire port for editing home movies, etc.

I don't know about 3D modeling, sorry.
