Your dog considered the lizard to be prey, and killed it.

When prey flees a dog, it triggers a chase reaction in the dog.

That is the way dogs are, they are hunters.

His prey drive kicked it. Dogs chase, it is instinct, then they bite. It comes from being cousins of wolves. It is usually trained out of them in regards to people, but small animals still seem like prey to them. If you have a carnivore pet and a small one, you need to monitor or separate them. Sorry about the loss.

well, it's a dog, what did you expect it to do? Give it a nice kiss and a friendly handshake? Anything small that runs spells prey for a hunting animal...

Dogs are predators and will also protect territory and pack (you are part of the pack).

It could just be that the hunt/chase/kill was fun for the dog. That's just what they do naturally.

DOGS ARE NATURALLY PREDITORY ANIMALS AND WILL MOW DOWN A SQUIRREL OR RABBIT VERY QUICKLY UNLESS THE ANIMALS WERE RAISED TOGETHER.

Dogs are omnivorous & would like to have some meat for food.

Dogs are always on their toes just for two things: Food & Mating!
