Freon or R22 as it used to be called, not sure now, may be using R134a is a coolant that has excellent temperature transfer qualities so when its cooled on the outside(evaporator - evaporate heat) and forced through an orifice(small hole) its relative temperature drops so it goes from over 100 degrees to below 50 and into the condenser(inside the house).
A/C units are a "closed system" which means the coolant never is exposed to air. Therefore it should never leak. Realistically, a trained technician with the appropriate tools is needed to close the leaks and re-charge the system. If the system is low or some freon has leaked out then the system will not work as efficiently and, if left un fixed, will damage the compressor.

It when the Freon leak from your system. Freon is a gas that liquefies under pressure. High Press side of AC small Line. Then it goes through a Atomizer of sorts that work like the Water Nozzle on a Garden Hose to Release the Pressure (large Line) and become a gas. This causes a cooling effect. And the Freon absorbs the Heat from the House and Transfers it to the Outside Coils and Fan where it Dissipates. IF, the Freon leaks from the system you lose Pressure and your AC works less and less until it not do anything. It is usually fixed by locating the leak either with a Dye in the System or a Freon Sniffing Tool. You can usually find the leak somewhere that the Large or Small line may Vibrate on something and in time wears a small hole in the line. The other place it can be located is at Fittings and where it Filled at.

Its the chemical that is compressed causing it to get cool. then its pumped through tubes while your air is blown past it to cool down the air which is then sent through ducts to each room in your house. A leak would mean that there is a crack in a line somewhere or rubber seals have gone bad in the compressor, etc. It can be fixed but first the freon must be removed. Since they no longer use freon because it causes ozone depletion you cant just drain the freon into the air and try to refill the line.
I would have a professional come look at it. They'll know what part is broken and how to 'recharge' the freon in the system.

Freon is the juice that makes the lemonade as far as your a/c is concerned---without it--all you have is an expensive fan----and a leak of this stuff is not only costly (price the stuff) but it spells death to the unit as a functioning utility
Don't have a clue here as to where the leak is---nothing said on this subject---if is in a number of places (seals / hoses / valves etc) it can be repaired and without super duty expense---but if it is in the compressor----BIG TROUBLE THERE----not nearly so inexpensive and not nearly so easily dealt with----But---no matter where the leak is---it will have to be repaired or you are going to get very warm in the next little while----all of these repairs MUST be dealt with by a qualified service technician and you can get estimates from at least three before making your deal----Good Luck with this---and I hope this helps

Freon is a gas.
It is not supposed to leak
You need a service person to come around. You cannot do it yourself.
He will put a dye in the gas system which will indicate where the leak is and whether it is possible to repair or replace.
He will also have to regas your system after the repair is done.
Get a few quotes for regassing and ask the cheapest quote to do the repair. This may save you a few dollars.
Have the model number and manufacturers name written down when you call.
There may also be some enviromantal issues regarding the replacement gas, depending on your regional legislation.

I believe freon is the fluid inside your AC that allows the conditioner to cool down your room. If it's leaking, that's not a good thing and you'll probably have to get rid of it. Sounds like a cheaper alternative than getting someone to fix it.

Freon is what helps to cool your house, i think it is actually a gas compressed into a liquid, but no, its not supposed to leak but it does happen...take it in to get the leak repaired and just have them refill the freon...its not a major fix

Freon is the stuff that makes your air conditioner cool. If you have a leak, that means there is a hole somewhere in the hoses and needs to be fixed or the unit will not cool properly. It is not supposed to leak out and you should call a repairman about it asap.

you must call an AC technician, and he can repair the leak and replace freon that has leaked out of the AC unit
