Specifically, the pubic hair, and armpit hair as well are located in regions where humans have apocrine sweat glands.
Most of the sweat glands in the body are so-called eccrine glands which just sweat so water evaporates off to cool us down. The apocrine sweat glands in the pubic regions and armpits sweat a different material that is broken down by bacteria and releases a smell... This smell is then trapped by the hairs.
Although this is the main cause of what we consider unpleasant body odours the hairs additionally trap pheromones to mediate sexual attraction.
Also the pubic hair development would have been a visible sign of sexual maturity in our ancestors.

I think hairs on our body play important functions, for example, our eyebrows help to prevent sweat and small foreign objects from falling into the eyes. Our eyelashes are used for sensing something before it enters the eye and to warn the person that a fly, for example, is near the eye. Hairs act as transmitters of information, for example, vibrations caused by wind to indicate wind speed.
Hair is also used to highlight a feature on our face or body. Another function that our hairs do for us, such as the pubic hair, is to prevent our skin which comes into contact with each other to become stuck together. A bunch of hair between skin provides separation and ventilation as criss-crossing hairs form air pockets.

No, seriously, the proverbial burning "bush" is meant to act as a "dry lubricant;" it's somewhat "vestigial" from when the cavemen liked it rough! Nowadays, we're a trifle more "sophisticated" in our sexual behaviors while we're "doin' IT......." so we can choose whether or not to have the aid of "dry lubricant." Nowadays, most prefer "whipped cream." Sliced strawberries are a nice touch too!
