I have a soon to be 8yr old daughter that I am very honest with. If she ask a question I will give her an honest answer. I also have taught her a few curse words which she will only use around me because in the long run, she will hear them anyways.

I hear a lot of parents lie to their children and shelter them from the real world which one day they will face so I figure I'm just giving her a head start into how cruel and ugly the world can be but also how rewarding life can be with honesty and not being afraid to simply ask someone a question if you desire an answer or want more sprinkles on your ice cream.

Anyone else teaching their children about the real world?

I believe that you should talk to your children when they are old enough to understand..Why keep them in a fantasy world?? they need to be exposed to life and what really happens.. I talk to my girls about all things..they hear it in the street and school..I want them to get the right information from me.. when they go out in this world i want them to be able to take care of themselves in whatever situation that arises.. they have dealt with racism and death of friends through violence.. they have to be mentally prepared also.. life is tough these days..they need to be prepared

I plan on being honest with my daughter (who is only 18 months old) but I believe curse words are a form of illiteracy. By teaching your child to curse seems to be saying that instead of her using her mind to really express how she feels she can just cuss which will make her appear uneducated.

I am always honest with my children, unless its something that I know they are not able to understand yet. I would rather be real with them, sometimes it hurts, but I would rather they find out from me than someone else, I want them to know they can always ask me anything and hope that if I am honest with them they'll be honest with me. Some things I do try to hide, not because I dont want them to know, but because I dont want them to be scared of things that they don't fully understand, so on occasion I will sugar-coat it.
