There are ove 100 odd and obscure ones. There isn't a third common one.

It turns out the riddle has been distorted. Pause on it for a moment and consider this riddle:

"Railroad crossing, watch out for the cars. How can you spell it without any R's? "

The answer is "You spell 'it' 'I-T' - no R's."

However, if someone came home from school and said "Dad, how can you spell 'Railroad Crossing' without using the letter 'R' ?", you could not. The original riddle would have been distorted enough to be unanswerable. The original form of the "-gry" riddle is this:

"Angry and hungry are two words that end in '-gry'. There are three words in the English language. What is the third word? Everyone knows what it means and everyone uses it every day. Look closely and I have already given you the third word. What is it?"

The correct answer is: The third word in "The English Language" is "Language". Like the railroad crossing riddle, the first sentence diverts your attention and has nothing to do with the question itself.

However, for some reason the distorted (and unsolvable) form of the riddle is far more common than the proper form.

The -Gry Puzzle is a popular puzzle that asks for the third English word, other than "angry" and "hungry," that ends with the letters "gry." Aside from words derived from "angry" and "hungry," there is no stand-alone word ending in "gry" that is in current usage. Both Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged (Merriam-Webster, Inc., 2002, ISBN 0877792011) and the Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition (Oxford University Press, 1989, ISBN 0198611862) contain the phrase "aggry bead." To find a third word ending in "gry" that is not part of a phrase, you must turn to obsolete words or personal or place names. A list of 130 of these is given at the end of this article.

This puzzle has no good answer, yet it has become the most frequently asked word puzzle. The regular readers of the Usenet newsgroup rec.puzzles have coined the word "nugry" to describe a (presumably) new reader who posts a frequently asked question.

The original riddle was worded like this:

"Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

The answer is "language". The third word in "the English language".

The actual words to this riddle is:
"Two commonly known words that end in -gry are hungry and angry. What is the third word in the english language"

You see, this is a play on words. The third word in "THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE" is language.

There is no other real word that ends in -gry.

Tricky....

Gry. It is a word meaning "of little value".. I have also heard it used to mean the dirt that collects under your fingernail

There is no third word that has other letters + gry.

ogry...It means to use one tenth of something.
Here is the whole explanation. After hours of searching , I finally discovered that the word is "ogry", meaning "a tenth of" or "a tenth portion of". The clue that it is used every day "if you think about it" is an indication of the partial use of the human brain, usually considered to be 5 to 10% of the actual capacity. The riddle is misleading. While the word does exist, and was once in use, though NEVER commonly, it fell out of use in most English speaking areas in the mid 1500's to the early 1600's, and was completely removed from texts no later then the early 1800's.

I've heard this one so many times. But it was usually ended with "If you send this on to ten people, the answer will automatically appear on the screen!" Which obviously never happens so I don't think there is one.
