I suspect that you are being disingenuous, but it seems reasonable to explain that male connectors fit inside female connectors, and to demonstrate with, for example, garden hose connectors.

'Male' connectors are the ones with something sticking out and 'female' connectors do not. You don't need to explain it any further if you don't want to, except to say that you need one of each for a good connection.

one has holes in the connector, the other has pins on the connector
let it go at that!
