Get rid of the source and the fruit flies will die. The source is anything oranic that is old or rotting. Sometimes it if the filth that accumulates around and inside of drains and garbage disposals. High moisture area's are also conducive to fly populations because moisture is a natural agent that helps decay organic matter at a speedy rate.

A fruit fly's life span is only 24 hrs. Wash all fresh fruit; even bananas and dry them. They are also attracted to moisture. Throw all residue from eaten fruit & food in a plastic bag and put in trash outside the home. Removing the source is best preventive.

Pour a cup of bleach down your kitchen and bathroom drains. especially your garbage disposal if you have one. Sometimes they take up residence in the drains. also- u might be getting them from plants in the house... possibly overwatering?
