the horse's outside shoulder should be moving away from you as you post up and toward you as you go down.

years of riding will enable you to feel it.. but the trick i used when i first started riding english was to look down and his shoulders to see which leg was moving where.. if i was on the wrong beat i would sit for two strides and start posting again, it usually worked. if you can get some one to watch you while you are riding, tell them what you are looking for, and what leg should be hitting the ground when you and in the seat, they can point out if you are posting in stride with the horses trot. hope this helps! happy trails!

You have to be posting to the outside leg I believe, If you are not sure lnace down and if you are going up when the outside leg is going forward you are going on the right diagnol. If you are on the wrong one just sit a beat and you will be on the right one. Good Luck!! This website is also very at teaching the posting trot http://www.youngrider.com/youngrider/detail.aspx?aid=2049&cid=3738&search=

If you're posting on the wrong beat the horse's back will jar you when you're coming down. At least, that's what my mom told me. On the right beat you should come down in sinc with the horse. You don't want to meet the horse's back bouncing up when you're coming down - that means you're off beat.

you post upward when the horses outside foreleg moves forward ! and if you are posting with the inside leg then you sit two trot beats and then you will be on the right diagonal as it is called!
