The minimum figures for the body's daily water loss are 500ml through urine and 700ml through breathing and sweating. Doctors advise that to be on the safe side we should drink at least 1.2 litres, which is 2.5 pints, of liquid. So, remember, although water is essential, you don't need to become obsessed about drinking eight glasses a day!

i've included the source link as well, it comes under the title 'Water Myth'

2 Litres is usually the recommended amount for an adult to drink, but because of the recent heatwave the amount has been doubled. You should be drinking 3 litres minimum a day, although 4 is the advised amount.

I work in healthcare and the new rule of thumb is: Take your weight, divide it by two, and that's how many ounces you need a day. So if you weigh 180lbs, you would need 90 ozs, or about 4 and a half 20oz bottles.

Plus, if you drink stuff with lots of caffeine (like coffe) you have to figure more. If you drink an 8 oz cup of coffee, you need 16 oz of water plus your normal, daily amount, to keep yourself fully hydrated.

Hope this helps.

You should drink 2 litres of water a day as a "normal" adult, however if you are exercising your water intake should be more than 2 litres, the amount will vary according to how much exercise you do.

3 litres in the present heat in the UK.
The way to check is
a) whether your mouth feels fresh or a bit foggy. If the latter you are beginning to get dehydrated.
b) If your urine is other than very clear pale gold, then again that is a sign of dehydration.

To become seriously dehydrated is a) agony and b) potentially causes permanent damage.

As a male, you have the advantage that if you Over Hydrate, it is easy to off-load liquid.

8 glasses. But sip a little at a time throughout the day, rather than bolting down a glass or two at a time.

Also, if you work out or do heavy work that causes you to sweat a lot, you may need more than 8 to replace what you lose.

You don't need to drink 8 glasses of water a day. You certainly don't need 1/2 your body weight (in oz.) per day. You don't need ANY arbitrary target amount per day. That's just an urban myth with NO basis in science! NONE!!
Drink when you're thirsty. Period!
