Think about if your friends or family were that way to you...how would you feel? Treat others the way you want to be treated.

All people are selfish. There are basically two kinds of selfish people: Mature selfish and unmature selfish. A mature selfish person understands that sharing, cooperating, and being considerate are in his best interest and serves his long term goals better. Seek relationships that are mutually satisfying.

i think i have a good answer for you. i cant think of any other reason for you to want to let others know about you except that you have low self-esteem. your own opinions and feelings arent enough for you. you need the justification and approval of others, so you constantly seek their attention. and i know that 17 is just a cocky, "i think im bulletproof" age anyways. believe me, you will do a LOT of maturing in the next few years, hopefully, especially when you go off to college. because if you keep that attitude, you will quickly lose friends and have people thinking youre really gay for being so selfish. no one wants a friend like that. i think your problem is based on immaturity and lack of self confidence. your abilities and tangible things shouldnt be all you are about. you need to GIVE attention to others in order for them to not think you are selfish, instead of trying to take it all. hope this helps!

Try to do one nice thing for someone else every day. A compliment, some flowers for your mum, picking something up for someone - whatever.

And no, I don't think it's unusual to be a bit selfish when you're a teenager, it's an age when people are often quite wrapped up in themselves. And if you recognise that you're selfish then you're well on your way to fixing it.

Selfishness is normal. But you shouldn't exaggerate. If you indeed don't want to be selfish, you can. Think that not always people want to steal your thing. There is no problem if somebody uses one of your thing and gives it back. And you should learn to be happy whenever you can help people.

It sounds like you are conceited rather than selfish. Keep in mind that if you really do have certain abilities or possessions these will be evident to people without your having to broadcast it.

The old phrase "action speaks louder than words" comes to mind. If you have ability, then show them in what you do. If you talk too much about your abilities then people will see you as self obssessed and arrogant.

The best tip I can give to you is: next time you want to talk about yourself, ask someone else about themselves....... and listen.

I have always believed that a truely hard-core person does not feel the need to actually tell people that they are hard-core. If they do, than they are just trying to make themselves look good because they feel badly about themselves. So, be hard-core and show people what you are good at, not by telling them or trying to show off (if thats what you do), but through your actions. People will appreciate it much more.

I wouldn't worry about it. Everybody is selfish. Even people who do charitable acts are usually doing it to increase their own feeling of self-worth (this may be subconscious and they are not aware of why they are doing it) or otherwise they may be doing it to improve their image, status or reputation.

Perhaps you could try volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, a local food shelter or a church.

Sometimes you gotta worry about yourself and not everyone else and thats ok. Just dont get too carried away... You need to keep in mind you need to care about more people than yourself.
