Actually "old conservatives" have now become the democrats. Neo-conservatives have become some kind of closet fascists. Even though I have never agreed with capitalism: old conservatives were doing a lot of good for the United States. After WWII the United States really boost up and became the world power. Now since the beginning of the Bush era the United States has been on a big downfall. Now China and India are very close to our economy and we depend in many allies specially Japan.

Neo-conservatives have all the cool Neo powers from the Matrix.

All kidding aside, the term neocon has come up in recent years to describe a somewhat new breed of conservative views following the turn of the century. I also think liberals today tend to make it sound like neo-Nazi (a negative connotation behind it for sure).

As a moderate Republican, I kind of wish for the pre-9/11 days when us conservatives were more concerned about saving money, border defense and making fun of Bill Clinton's sexual preferences.

From what I've seen, neo-cons are aggressive right-wingers who see war as a politcal tool. Very supportive of military action, many neo-cons call anyone who disagrees "un-American" or "un-patriotic". They want to make all countries be like the U.S. governmentally (Iraq) but don't see what a threat and annoyance the U.S.'s involvement is to most of the world.

I've been called Un-American many times and even spit on by one neo-con. Sad that people refuse to understand that it's far, far, FAR from the truth (I'm a democrat). I love America, I'm sad at what it's become.

Most of the prominent New-Conservatives are Jewish. Neocon's are the ones that work with the Israel lobby in Washington DC. It is a huge rich lobbying group with many volunteers who work on our Elected Officials to get them to cooperate and support Israel's actions and point of view.
The neocon's took it upon themselves to strongly support and push George W. Bush into attacking Iraq. One major reason the Israeli's so feared and hated Saddam, and to a great extent justifiably so, is because Saddam promoted suicide bombers who attacked Israel, but also, Saddam had fired rockets into Israel during the first Gulf War.
The problem I have with Israel's influence over Bush is that it was not in the interest of the United States to attack Iraq. The intelligence was fairly clear that Saddam was not an imminent threat to America, but with Bush and Company fixing the intelligence around the policy to invade Iraq, the Israel lobby pushing and lobbying turned the tide against pausing and rethinking this doomed policy, and just look where we are now.

Unless I am mistaken, "neo" is a prefix that means "new". I think the left glommed onto it because the new nazis are called "noe" and they think it makes conservatives sound like nazi supporters.
