Go with the Gateway--it's more future compatible. The Compaq still uses DDR RAM, which is getting phased out, while the Gateway is using DDR2 which is current. You also get a larger hard drive, more RAM, and a dual core processor. This Gateway is better than the Compaq.

The Gateway has a bit more horsepower of these two. I like the slightly larger LCD monitor.

You might have a close look at http://www.DELL.com . Go to DESKTOPS and pick HOME & OFFICE,

then pick Entertainment Desktops (2)

then click the CUSTOMIZE IT button for Dimension E310

Then click the CUSTOMIZE IT button for the Dimension E310
Base System

When you PICK similar options as these to deals at BestBUY, you get a faster machine for around $700 (free shipping)

The key is that it would be a Pentium IV with 800 FSB

Good luck

well, graphically the nvidia on board gfx will surpass the ati's, the 3700+ at 2.2ghz, with 1mb of l2 cache is a quick chip, despite the lower amount of ram, the athlon with 1-gig will adequately handle 99 % of today's app's, the only reason to go dual core is if you are a serious multi-tasker, not sure if that intel chip even supports 64 bit 0s for upgrading, but with the new conroe coming out from Intel, the pricepoint may get better. Due to the "floating Math" of the amd chip along with sse, sse2, it makes a great bargain, then again, alot depends on the motherboard...For frugal folk, go AMD, if you desire dual core, still go AMD (i.e. an athlon X2 4400+ outperformed a Pentium 980 in benchmarks, maximum pc folks put it in black and white).....not big with the microsoft media center, but to get what you really need, at today's pricepoints?, simple build your own, and when done let'er rip.....(then you over-clock!)

Well, it depends on what you want to do with the puter. I, personally, being on a fixed income would go with the first unit. A little less system ram, but, 1 gig is workable... and do you really need the extra 50 gig of hd? For gaming, or pics, or stuff of that nature, even word processing, 200 gig ought to be sufficient.
Good luck.

Neither. Get a Dell, they are a better choice if you're going for a PC. Or alternatively you could choose a Mac, take a look at www.apple.com - I highly suggest Apple's iMac computer for buyers like yourself.

I know this isn't what you asked, but try HP.com. Better computers, better deals.
