In 1877 England adopted a scheme of giving each player a cap number. So when each player receives their first cap they are assigned a number, that started with 1, a T Armitage. Some interesting names and numbers: 13 Lord Harris; 18 Reverend Royle; the legendary Dr W.G. Grace was 24; 25 the honourable A. Lyttleton; 96 The 7th Lord Hawk; 230 Lieutenant-Colonel RT Stanyforth and another legend Fred Trueman at 369. More recent big names include 422 Geoffrey Boycott; 477 Mike Gatting; 474 Ian Botham; 494 Allan Lamb; 538 Michael Atherton; 542 Nasser Hussain; 543 Alec Stewart; 568 Darren Gough; 591 Andrew Flintoff; 600 Michael Vaughan, the current captain; acting captain Andrew Strauss is 624 and the most recently capped player, Jon Lewis is 634.

its their number.

Every time new player is called up to the squad hes is given a number. the first person to get called up is number 1, the next number 2. as you can imagine a lot of people have gained a cap over the years so the number is well into 3 figures.

Quite true from Perkins >>>> It is the order in which they have represented England in test matches or 1 day matches - The answers above are nearly right, but more than one player can have the same number if they made their debut in the same match. Cricket is a cool game dudes.
