At work today (work for small company out of a house) the boss told 2 co-workers to go outside and kill a groundhog in the backyard. The two couldn't wait cause they love killing since they like to hunt. Long story short...they used a pellet gun and shot at it numerous times (about 10 minutes), then finally heard the poor thing screaming / squealing. Still not dead, but now suffering. One of the guys even had an axe ready to hack it up if it came out from where it was hiding. At that time I got up and said "This Is Disgusting" and left for the day (only 1/2 hour early, but still..). Am I over-reacting, or would you have found this disturbing as well? I'm the type who would've trapped the groundhog, then released it down by the river or something.

I hunt as well, but this isn't right. That is not a humane way to dispose of an animal. If you are going to shoot it, do it with something that is going to kill it. If you can't do that, trap the thing a move it on down the road. The axe is more humane than a pellet gun as it should do the job quickly, but who wants to do or witness that???

It is against the law in most places to do this as it amounts to animal cruelty.

I don't blame you for leaving.

No, you are not over reacting.

I am not a animal rights wacko, but I do believe that you should not kill animals in this fashion. First, was there really a reason to kill it at all? There are professionals out there that can trap these guys and take them away.

Second, they way they attempted to kill the little guy tells me a lot about who you work for. Those who enjoy torturing and killing small animals such as your co workers tend to have serious mental issues.

I would report them to the proper authorities for animal cruelty and I could not work with people that delight in the suffering of a life.

I never would have let them do it in the first place, I would have told them I'd take care of it and done what I could to trap it or drive it away. A call to a pest control place may have worked as well.

They are pigs and should be riddled with pellets and left to suffer.

That is very sickening. If you're going to hunt something, make sure you have the appropriate firepower so the animal doesn't suffer. With that said, they should have just chased the groundhog away rather than kill it. Very sick and very sad.

Truly disgusting and most disturbing. You didnt over react at all. Where we live there are lots of hunters, nut none like to see an animal suffer. There was no call for that.

If the boss thought the groundhog was interferring with the work being done, he should have called an animal control specialist.

It is completely wrong for them to shoot anything with a pellet gun numerous times. Animal cruelty is a felony now and not taken lightly with the local police or the ASPCA. You should have called and reported them immediately.

YOUR RIGHT THAT IS TERRIBLE. also very cruel. How would they like it if someone tried to kill them that way? You should ask your boss that if that should arise again to do it a much better way and do it after business hours. That had nothing to do with buisness, it was a personal matter and should be taken care of after hours. That the whole epoisode affended you and now you don't think as highly of him or her as you once did.

Uh, haven't they ever heard of rat poison? There are quieter and less painful ways to kill pest animals, although usually trapping and releasing them without a special permit such as a wildlife rehabilitator's permit is illegal.

Sounds like you work with a bunch of rednecks that have nothing better to do. Yeah its disturbing how two grown men get their kicks off of killing poor defenseless animals. Tell them I said, "grow up!"
