I think that it is the one amendment that makes all the others possible. Without an armed populace, the government could grow totalitarian and systematically start removing our rights.
If you look at totalitarian regimes that have oppressed people throughout history, the first thing that they did when coming into power is to disarm the people. Hitler did it, Stalin did it, Pol Pot did it, etc etc. When a people are unable to arm themselves, organize and defend their basic rights they are easier to control and herd like sheep.

The simple truth is that we are a safer society with this amendment. This is not a justification for vengeance but it is an example of deterrence. When someone decides to break into my home and threaten my family, he'd better be prepared for a fight to the death. Not because I'm all into violence, but because very few people are willing to go ahead into a house where he might be looking down the barrel of a big boomaker. In England where they've outlawed guns, do you think the violent crime rate went up or down? How about Australia? Every where its been implemented the results are the same. Take guns away from the law abiding citizens and law breakers begin to do everything they think they can get away with. Home break ins with violence increased by 60% in the first year.

Part of the idea of the second amendment was to keep the government from disarming its citizens to control them. Granted technology has changed so much that my hunting rifle isn't going to present much of a threat to a squad of well trained soldiers, but it represents an ongoing commitment to the idea of the sovereign citizen. When a government has no fear of reprisal from its citizens, the tendency is to grab more of our freedoms away from us. The right to keep individual arms and create state/local militias reminds us and our government that we are supposed to be the master and they are supposed to be the loyal servant, not the other way around.

So that the citizenry can protect itself. The states with right to carry laws have the lowest crime rates and that is a reality. Britain's violent crime rate increased 100% in the first year of their gun ban. If someone breaks into your home and you call the police for protection, by the time they arrive your whole family could be dead.

It is etremely important. It is our god given right to have and own property and it is our god given right to protect our property. Without the right to bear arms, all of our other rights are subject to being exterminated. Another point, if guns were outlawed, then the only people who had guns would be criminals. How would the law abiding citizen be able to protect themselves from criminals. Also, think about how scary it would be if the government had weapons and we didn't. Need I say more?

I think that militias went out with the creation of the military, but I take full advantage of that right as a gun owner.

It is because pepole want to feel protected. And some feel that only if they own a gun themselves.."extreme protection".
But, to me it is not as important as the 1st or the 10th.

It has saved me from being robbed or otherwise harmed in a few situations. I don't know if I would be alive without it.
