The liger is a cross (a hybrid) between a male lion and a female tiger. It is therefore a member of genus Panthera. It has also been known as a lion-tiger mule. A liger looks like a giant lion with diffused stripes. Some male ligers grow sparse manes. Like tigers, but unlike lions, ligers enjoy swimming.
A cross between a male tiger and a female lion is called a tigon. According to The Tiger, Symbol of Freedom rare reports have been made of tigresses mating with lions in the wild. [1]
A. A. Milne wrote in The London Magazine, "Under exceptional circumstances it has been known for a tiger to be forced into ranges inhabited by the Asian lion, Panthera leo persica, which is the same genus as the tiger. Rare reports have been made of tigresses mating with lions in the wild and producing offspring known as ligers. When a tiger and a lioness mate the cub is called a tigon.'" [2] This would have referred to the Gir Forest in India where the ranges of Asiatic Lions and Bengal Tigers overlap.

A liger is the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger. It is a hybrid, not a true species, especially since the offspring of a female lion and a male tiger looks different and so is called a "tigron." Ligers are really big animals, about 900-1000 lbs, while tigrons are little squirts at about 150 -250 lbs. Ligers and tigrons are not common because a lion and tiger will only mate if you leave a lion and tiger together while the female is in heat and there are no males of the opposite sex of female's species in there. They used to do that often in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries at carnivals and such as an easy way to create "rare exotic" animals. Now they do not happen very often. I just had the opportunity to see a real live liger while on vacation recently. His name was Hercules and he was HUGE! He was tan like a lion with faint tigerish stripes. His tail did not have a tuft and he had no mane, but he is still fairly young, perhaps too young to have one.

The liger is a cross (a hybrid) between a male lion and a female tiger is in the genus Panthera. A liger looks like a giant lion with diffused stripes. Some male ligers grow sparse manes. Like tigers, but unlike lions, ligers enjoy swimming. The liger is the world's largest big cat. An average male liger weighs over 900 pounds and standing almost 12 feet tall. The Liger is more common than the tigon because the mating process is easier. The liger has both stripes and spots. The stripes are inherited from its tiger parent and the spots from the lion parent. Ligers are usually orangish /golden in color. If the hybrid offspring is a male, it will have a leonine mane, but it will not be as large and defined as a normal lion's mane. The liger gets most of its strength and size from both of its parents; this makes the liger possibly the largest cat in the world! Ligers are not sterile, and they can reproduce. If a liger were to reproduce with a tiger, it would be called a titi, and if it were to reproduce with a lion, it would be call a lili.
A cross between a male tiger and a female lion is called a tigon and is a dwarf. A fully grown tigon is usually less that 350 lbs. The Tigon (Tiglon or Tion) is very rare, only a few exist in the world and those are held only by private owners. This is because it is much more difficult to get the male tiger to mate with the female lion. Tigons look very similar to ligers. They have varying stripes and spots. Tigons are also orangish in color. Males may have a mane, but will be very modest. They are able to produce both lion and tiger sounds when they roar. One difference between tigons and ligers is their size. Tigons are not nearly as large as ligers. In fact, tigons are often times smaller than both of their parents. The lifespan of tigons, as well as other hybrid animals, is shorter than a normal species. The animals seem prone to cancers and other illnesses. The
Ligers and tigons are rare in the wild.
