First let me say, you need to specify what you like and want. Do know that these days outside of the US and Japan and perhaps Canada the quality of life drops off dramatically among the G8. And, conditions can and do change over time.

So, do your research of what you want within the US regarding crime, climate, etc. Or, go teach English in Tokyo and see if you like it. There are many horror stories on-line about this but at least these people had well-paying jobs.

But, do not believe the person who said Toronto unless you are a student downtown. Toronto has a horrible climate, crime, housing is impossible (unless you are wealthy, perhaps). I found that while people appear friendly it was only on the surface. I lived in greater Toronto in 1997/98 and decent affordable housing even for an engineer was impossible. It was so bad that I finally went home, leaving my husband there.

I had my car stolen in Montreal and another friend had hers stolen in Toronto. Canada is not crime free though it may be lower crime.

Europe has degenerated greatly over the last twenty years. Life is hard. Unless you actually want to practice speaking a particular language you can listen in the comfort of your home elsewhere (satellite or Internet). Also, Europe (except Switzerland where it is private) still has some form of socialized medicine, but I think the quality is probably highly variable.

And, it's not so easy to get permission to live in Europe.

I think that Quebec City and Montreal are still nice places, but have not been there for a decade. Cost of housing has increased. And, probably some towns in western Canada. The bonus is an easy form of socialized medicine of very high quality (despite the lies to the contrary).

And, do know that as an American it's not easy to get permission to live in Canada. I'm married to a Canadian, speak both national languages and they never gave me my papers.

It has to be Dublin in Ireland. It's a beautiful city with friendly people. It's got the widest street in Europe. It has the Book of Kells, which is a beautiful handpainted manuscript dating back to 800 AD, housed in Trinity College. It has the river Liffey running through the City, the largest park in Europe and is half an hour away from the Wicklow Mountains and the sandy beaches of Sutton.

The pubs, hotels and restraunts are a great experience to enjoy and I go back to the people, they're the friendliest bunch you'll find in the world.

Then there's the golf, the horse riding, the rugby and last but not least the music. There's loads more - I could go on forever.

Does anyone agree with me?

Most places have some kind of issue. You have to weigh the good with the bad.
California has wonderful temp but earthquakes. Gulf coast, hurricanes. I don't know abut the rest of the world, but the east coast..mid Atlantic is nice. No serious traumas but the weather in late July thru august gets miserable. Further north you get the mean and nasty winters. So I would say Maryland to Georgia.
Also Vancouver is supposed to be an incredible place to live.
Don't care about temperatures? Minneapolis would be my first choice. Its a great art city and a lot of things to see and do.

The best places for me ... there is a tie between two: I want to live in Vegas or Austin. They are the best American cities. I've been everywhere man, I've been everywhere.
