Yes and no. Yes in the sense that the offical code of ethics for doctors do not restrain them from self-prescribing and hence it does not deem it as illegal. But however, the general medical council's view is that it is unethical and unprofessional. So they strongly advice against self prescribing.

Yup-They usualy take samples from their offices for their families as well. They prescribe what they don't have in the office.
It shouldn't be this way, either. Many doctors are addicted to prescription drugs.

They are not supposed to treat themselves or their families in the UK, but maybe they do. It's called ethics and the code of practise.

normally gps aren't allowed to self-prescribe, but i'm sure they do in an emergency situation.
The BMA will always say that it is unethical to self-prescribe but in emergencies !! Who knows?

My doctors see the other doctors in the practice when they are ill so they do not write scripts for themselves.
