"Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six," (Rev. 13:18).

666 is the number of the antichrist, the end times figure who will arise with the purpose of opposing God and God's people. 666 is the gamatria of the name of the antichrist.
In Greek and Hebrew there are no numeric characters. There are only alpha characters. For example, the letters a, b, c, d, e, f, etc. are alpha characters. The numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, etc., are numeric characters. They are different -- except for the letter "o" and the number "0". When the Greeks wanted to write a number, they used letters for numbers. The Greek letter "alpha" had the numeric equivalent of 1. The next letter "beta" has the numeric equivalent of 2, and so on. (CARM has a chart of the Hebrew and Greek numeric equivalents if you are interested in more information.)
Therefore, whenever a word in Greek is written, because the letters are also numbers, every word has a numeric value. This numeric value is called a gematria. The Greek word for Jesus (IhsouV) has a mathematical equivalent of 888. Also, the Greek word for fish is 1224.
What the Bible is saying is that the future antichrist will have a name that when it is written in Greek, its numeric equivalent will be 666.

666 is the ultimate number of imperfection. It falls short of the number of perfection, being 7 and 666 falls short of it three times over. The number does not stand for the antichrist only, but instead stands for evil in general, because whatever is short of 7, is not perfect.

I have added a link to a commentary on Revelations. It also helps dispell any rumors that the number is linked to Nero. Maybe it was, but maybe it was not.

The number 666 is commonly regarded as an example of gematria, an ancient numbers game in which each letter of the alphabet was assigned a numerical value. Any name could be encoded in a number representing the total of the letters in the name. John makes it clear that 666 is man's number, or "the number of a person" (NRSV). The problem is that with a bit of ingenuity many prominent names in every generation can be made to add up to 666. One commentator wrote that such identifications "lead to nothing just because they lead to everything" (Hendriksen 1939:273). The numbers work quite well, for example, with the name Adolf Hitler.

But in order to convey any meaning at all to John's original readers, 666 must have pointed to a name they recognized in their own time. The most common suggestion is Nero Caesar. But as Robert Mounce has pointed out (1977:264), "this solution asks us to calculate a Hebrew transliteration of the Greek form of a Latin name, and that with a defective spelling." When the Latin form of the name is transliterated directly into Hebrew, the result is 616, and sure enough, in the western Roman Empire where Latin was dominant, there were manuscripts in which the number was recorded as 616 (Irenaeus noticed this already in the late second century in his Against Heresies 5.30). Clearly, the scribes who copied the book of Revelation were familiar with gematria, and it may well have played a part in John's riddle. Yet because of its indeterminacy no solution based on that phenomenon alone is likely ever to be proven or to find general acceptance.

Since Hebrew letters all have numerical values, the number 666 stands for the Roman emperor Nero.....not some fanciful anti-Christ character the bible-beaters have dreamed up.

Everyone above is wrong!
666 doesn't and can't stand for anything.
The reason it can't stand is because it is on its head!
When you turn it right side up, it's fixed.
Now it can stand for something - 999. That's - 9 * 9 * 9

if we take the numerical values of the letters in the so-called Aramaic Square Alphabet, the result is "Neron Kesar"=the emperor Nero.
He was the Beast in John's time: but it applies to any person or ideology in any time which forces people to worship him/her/it rather than God.
The message of Revelation is one of hope:Jesus will come and bring history to its fulfillment. It's not meant to scare aqnybody with doomsday stuff...
