If the car doesn't have too many miles on it (it's a 2002) you may be able to take it to the dealership to have them fix it under warranty. If it's out of warranty, you can problably remove the arm rest, door skin and then see if you can find the broken piece. It can probably be put back in place without a repair bill.
Other possible reasons for the problem: If the car was hit on that side, the latch may have been broken. And, if this car had 4 doors, it might have a child safety latch that prevents it from being opened from the inside. I've never seen a 2 door with the feature, but check for a switch on the door panel.

Open the door from the outside... look at the door edge. Somewhere on the door edge you will find a lever of sorts. Change the position of that lever and you will have disengaged the child protective device that keeps them from opening the doors from the inside. Details should be in your owner's manual. No owner's manual? www.helminc.com sells them.
Good luck!

The latch on the inside of the door is either broken or the rod that runs from the inside handle to the latch has worked it's way loose.

till he's in a wheelchair or making use of a walker, he could be establishing doors for you and pulling out your chair. If he's ninety 8, that hought to be 2d nature for him. of course, if he makes use of a walker or wheelchair, i could say you would be getting the doors for _him._
