There's always a carrying capacity that any species works to fill, once they control a niche. And we, as humans, are different in that we are technological, we push the carrying capacity further and further. Are we capable of great stupidities, global mishaps, slaughters and tragedies? yes-- and many indicate War as a natural tendancy to control the population gone above the technological support limit of the time. But I don't see catastrophe as the necessary outcome. We face many problems-- one being that we've submitted to technology-- but it's not simply possible to throw out technology to get better. We must use it to find a place for ourselves. And we can, there are many ways to implement more efficient fuels, power systems, agricultural practices.

In terms of government and the marketplace-- there too we should strive for sustainability. In the end, if no cautions are heeded, the ocean will rise, many people will go hungry, power grids will fail, water will become more expensive than gasoline. And we'll cope then. The force of those circumstances will force the world-culture to accept the parameters of the carrying capacity. Or to find demonstrable technologies that may mitigate, once again, the repercussions.

I think it will. The average family of 2.5 is going up the 3. Everyone doing that needs to think of what that means it terms of more people, more food, more gas, more welfare etc.
