I have a BA degree in advertising (not much help, but a degree nonetheless). I will be coming into the IT industry with no professional experience (other than IT recruiting from 5/05 to present). Will I only be marketable to helpdesk positions or will I be qualified and sought for a pc support/technician position?

those 2 certs are really all you need to get started i got my A+ N+ in december 05 in the end of january i got a job making $12 hr not that great but i had 0 hands on experience now 6 months later im making $20 an hour and i have a review in 2 weeks for another raise. im also working on pc's at home where i make real good money i charge anywhere from $25 to $75 an hour depending on the problem and the person.
if you need help finding a job go to a temp service here in miami they have a temp service for IT only positions and they always have availability as long as you have at least A+ cert.
good luck

Worst case(mine) have A+, net+, MCP, MCDST and Security +
and I can't find work at all.
You may likely get temp work doing installs or callcenters. These don't pay much and most people don't stay long.
If you want to hedge your bet get, at least, an MCSA and MCEA(Exchange Admin) and some other cert like Dell or HP..
hope that helps

Once you have your A+ and or N+ pretty much anybody will hire you for either of those to positions. Its just a matter of trying to get your foot in the door & having any past experience.

you can do helpdesk, or cabling jobs. if you want to obtain a cert where you need almost no experience to go straight to work.

CISSP

good luck.
